Custom Home Framing Salvage
Project type
Timber Framing & Framing Repair
Date
August 2023 - October 2023
Location
Mission Valley
A large custom home arrived in serious trouble — partially framed, with roof trusses set but no other roof framing complete, and a gable truss that had fallen off of its bearing wall, hanging from a brace connected to the adjacent trusses. The resulting rack had bowed every top chord on one side of the structure. It had been this way for over a year. A settled footing in one corner had dropped roughly two inches, and the homeowner had spread plywood across the partially assembled garage trusses and tarped it in an attempt to weatherproof the structure — all of it in the way before real work could begin.
I spent two weeks working through it alone — slowly straightening the bowed trusses, addressing each problem section methodically until the rack was corrected and the structure was sound enough to continue framing. When the homeowner brought in a crew of five additional carpenters to push the roof framing to completion, I was freed to concentrate on the timber framing. Together we turned what was likely headed toward a total loss of investment into a fully dried-in structure. I also set all of the windows and exterior doors to finish drying-in the structure.
